I will never be a prodigious writer. I don't have the time or the discipline to spend the time I would like developing this skill. You would think someone who like to hear himself talk as much as me would be a better blogger. :)
I am re-re-re-reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I just re-read his Baroque Cycle. The three books in that Cycle are among the most complex and layered (and LONG) books I have read. I really enjoy them both for the characters and the historically-accurate story lines. It is an interesting way to learn about the Glorious Revolution, the War of Spanish Succession, and the rise of the Hannover's.
That said, I love Cryptonomicon and that is what confirms (to me) that I am really nerdy. I have always been fascinated by the story of Alan Turing and the breaking of Enigma. I really like the way he weaves all the fictional and non-fictional characters together to tell that story. But the current day story line in the book will always be my favorite. The characters are very much like people I know and the subject of this plot line (data havens, encryption, etc.) appeals to the geek in me. I don't know many people who have read the book but I wish more would so there would be more opportunity to discuss it.
PS - Cedar season in Central Texas really sucks.
