Beowulf ruined my Tuesday night

So. We had rare Tuesday night babysitting because my mother-in-law was not working this week. AWESOME!!! Let's go to Alamo and see a movie. WOOHOO!!!

Beowulf looks pretty good in the ads and trailers. It reviewed pretty good (70% on Rotten Tomatoes) so how bad could it be. I will preface this by saying I sometimes have peculiar taste in movies. But even accounting for that, this was really not a good movie. It was not paced very well and had some silly special effects. Some of the visual effects were very good but similar to Polar Express (another Zemeckis stinker), some of it was just stupid.

However, I did like the stylized animation. It was cool but not a compelling reason to see the movie. The performances were okay but nothing really stood out.

Here is the rub. The movie was not THAT bad. Somewhere in the neighborhood of mediocre (6 on a 10 scale). The problem is that we used babysitting on this. I know all the parents out there understand the pain I am talking about. You get that perfect storm of Free Night, Babysitting, and Something You Want to Do...and then it just doesn't measure up.

Those nights are rare and have to be used wisely. So I say, "Shame on you, Robert Zemeckis". I know its not really his fault but someone has to take the blame. Oh well, 'I Am Legend' is up next. Let's see how that works out.
