...Oh...and a couple more things

Some things I saw on SportsCenter that made me need to put a few more things out here.

  1. Bud Selig is still the worst commissioner in sports.  The playing conditions are dangerous right now in the Yankees-Angels game.  A pop-up on the infield a few minutes ago looked routine only because Derek Jeter is a HOFer.  What happens if he gets a raindrop in the eye, gets no glove on the ball, and gets it right in the eye socket?  Shame on you for trying to protect your TV schedule, Bud.  You continue to show yourself as a complete tool.
  2. Kudos to DE Daniel Howard from Texas Tech.  About 18 of the 22 players on the field played the lateral like a dead ball.  But Howard and a couple of his teammates 'played it to the whistle'.  I am constantly lecturing my 6-7yo Flag Football team to play through contact and keep working to the whistle.  Good to see someone doing it right.
  3. Terrelle Pryor will keep breaking hearts in Columbus.  He is brilliant on one drive and terrible the next.  He seems to have all the talent in the world but it is hard to see where improvement has come for him.  Bad decisions and rough around the edges.
  4. Florida will need to get much better on offense to beat Alabama.  I can't wait to see these two battle it out because the defenses are both GREAT.  Alabama struggles to throw the ball but I think they can run it on anybody.  Florida has several good players on defense but no Percy Harvin is a much bigger loss than people thought at the beginning of the year.  He was an X factor guy that had to be accounted for at all times.  No one like that on the field for them now.
  5. Gene Chizik is very good against bad teams but has trouble with equal talent.  I know people don't want to hear that but it was true when he was DC at Texas, true at Iowa State, and it is true now.  People will say 'wait and see' but I don't think that leopard can change his spots.
  6. I was gonna stop at five but needed to get on my soap box for one more...Let the ESPN hype begin now.  Matt Barkley is odds-on favorite to win the Heisman next year.  He will be ANOINTED by all the experts...and they may be right.  He has been very good, very early in his career.  I just hate hearing about USC.

Everybody Just Needs to Settle Down

I LOOOOVVVVEEEE college football. I love watching, attending, and listening to the University of Texas. I have been a UT fan since the Todd Dodge days. There have been times when I have been, self-admittedly, guilty of irrational exuberance. Some of that might be the Cubs fan in me. Every year seems like the year until it is not the year. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Sometimes, when it benefits my team, I find myself cheering against other teams. Occasionally I am guilty of program envy. This usually happens with SEC teams because of my perception that they get a free pass from the national media most years. But, in the end, the SEC seems to prove itself to be better than most. Better athletes = better football most of the time. I think Les Myles is the exception to that and has mismanaged his team most years. LSU will tire of his act eventually.

But what I don't get is the paranoia/bitterness of the Texas Tech fanbase. The whole world is not out to get you. You don't get screwed in every big game. The teams that beat you every year are not cheaters and criminals. First the team and now the fans have taken on the craziness of their head coach. Today was a fantastic win for the Texas Tech program - Rated opponent, on the road, tough first half of the season, back up quarterback.

I think Tech will finish second in the South and will have a lot to be proud of by the end of the season. Time to celebrate? Apparently not. I have seen more "Texas got lucky..again" and "Why are we not getting enough credit for a big win?" than celebrating the victory. It is hard for the fans to embrace the positive when your coach starts every press conference with "Poor me!"

There are times when Mack Brown is so Pollyanna it makes me want to vomit but, having seen the alternative, I guess I will take Susie Sunshine over Eeyore for now.
